Gallery 96 Art Center was conceived in 1997 when a small group of Shoreview residents, interested in the visual arts, began discussing the need for an area art center where emerging and maturing artists could meet other artists, enter juried competition, and find a place to show their work. The organizing group also believed that education in the visual arts was needed to supplement offerings in secondary schools and to heighten awareness of the rich heritage of museums and galleries in the Twin Cities area.
Since the organization's inaugural exhibition in October 1998, members have participated in juried exhibitions each spring and fall at the Shoreview Ramsey County Public Library. A quarterly newsletter, Gallery 96 Views, offers members informative articles about art, book reviews, gallery overviews, exhibition announcements, and informative articles about art. Art Discussion, an informal monthly session held at the Shoreview Community Center, gives members opportunities to share their work and receive friendly feedback. Art at Your Doorstep, a Gallery 96 outreach program, brings lectures and demonstrations to area retirement centers. In addition, members receive invitations to special events such as exhibition openings, gallery talks, and fine art and craft shows.
